Three years of university have flown by!
In that time, I have grown my understanding of video and technology, far beyond what I could have imagined when I started.
Year One (Level 4)
Bad Reception (A Comedy Short)
The first video I created at university. This was created around the idea of making a non-speaking comedy, with the focus actually around learning editing and using the camera equipment.
Fake TV Show
University assignment to create a dummy TV show. Main focus was on transitions and other video effects.
Note: due to a copyright claim, there might be adverts on this video and there will be muted audio in parts.
Welcome Video (LJMU Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering)
As part of a first year assignment, I was tasked to create a welcome video for the university department.
All footage was recorded by myself, as was the audio and then the edit.
Side note: this is why you don't record audio in this office anymore. Right behind me was a big window and we had no sound proofing... echo city. In retrospect, should have mic'd up John!
Year Two (Level 5)
match and candle (slow motion footage)
Using a high speed camera in the department, the task was to film a match being lit by a candle. This was the unedited footage. Although real time this was less than 8 seconds, the frame rate that the high speed camera can capture is scary impressive. You can only see the flame and match start to interact from the 1min35s mark approximately.
VISE - Virtual Immersive Sports Experience
Task was to create a dummy promotional video for a product in order to "sell" the idea and business model (as well as demonstrate market research techniques).
Created by myself, Ryan Barry and Sam Rixon.
Video Insert (TV Project Work)
The task for each of us was to create a dummy VT package for live studio broadcast. This was part of us learning how to operate different roles within a live TV studio.
Creating a fully 3D environment with cameras and lighting within 3DS Max to create a logo concept.
This was one of the first pieces in my second year to complete and the main aim was to learn the various tools and capabilities of 3DS Max.
Green Screen Keying
One of my earlier pieces of work was getting to grips with the green screen, this included purposefully filming myself under the wrong lights so that colour correction would need to be undertaken before the green screen could be keyed out.
Results here are all done within Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.
Another task from within 3DS Max. Using the virtual camera to motion track an object to my hand. Focus was not on the lighting in this instance, more was to have the object move with my hand as well as rotate.
This was a second year assignment.

Motor with micro-stepping enabled (Final Year Project Piece)
Part of creating the telecine prototype for my final year project was the need to have a number of motors be capable of very small rotations, through the use of code (in this case Python) on the Raspberry Pi (3B+)
This video is to show the full motor range, which was 200 full steps running with 1/32 micro-stepping for a total of 6400 movements per rotation.

This video was created to see the exact stages of the telecine process. Starting from the original export (taken straight from the Raspberry Pi camera), the image sequence is then stabilised and then a colour correction pass is done (in Adobe Premiere Pro) to correct the red shift on the old film.
The final PAL export is then delivered as the piece to the client (in my case this was just my university lecturer).

Maximum Telecine Output (Final Year Project Piece)
This sample footage was taken from my Super 8mm telecine (film scanner) prototype which I created for my final year project.
Although not perfect (the film was unfortunately damaged), this shows what £150 of parts and a whole lot of build time will get you!
